Evolution Korea

In the past the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists in fear that doing so could increase the credibility of the movement. The silence is no longer an alternative.

The STR has been fighting to get the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is only one aspect of how the concept of development has changed.

What is Evolution?

The theory of evolution is a branch of science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. Over time, these changes can result in the creation of new species. The most popular theory of evolution is called natural selection, which describes the process by which people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with disadvantages. As time passes, this difference in reproduction may lead to the emergence of entirely new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word meaning unraveling or revealing, however the concept itself has a myriad of meanings since it took shape in the sciences and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, including Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that existing species changed into other species in a certain way. The term transmutation was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process in which living organisms develop traits to increase their chances of surviving or producing offspring. In time, genetic variation can lead a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. Natural selection is the main force behind most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they don't pass on to future generations.

Creationists have a tendency to use the argument that evolution is controversial, even though it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and it has been tested over time. They claim that the theory should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high school. This includes the removal of all references to the evolutionary roots of humans as well as Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur that is believed to be the bird's ancestor.

It is crucial to keep in mind, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The causes are not clear, but could include religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. Among these is a textbook on the natural sciences, with an orthodox creationist perspective, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught until today.

On August 7 and 8 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
