How to Replace Door Handles

Door handles are an essential element of your home's decor. A new handle will elevate your home and bring your decor to the present.

Over time, your knobs on your doors may begin to feel stiff or even break. These are indications that it's time to replace the knobs. This guide will help choose the right door handle replacement for your home.

Door Knobs

The handles on your doors will enhance the appearance of your home and allow you to open and close them. They come in a variety of finishes, colors and styles to complement your decor. If yours have started to show signs of wear or require an upgrade it is possible to replace them in a few easy steps.

The first thing you have to find is the spindle or shaft through which the knob is affixed to the door. Some knobs have a tiny opening that you can use a screwdriver to remove the set screws that keep the handle in place. Some have a slot or hole that can be used with a flathead screwdriver to press on a spring-activated pin, also known as a detent. When you press this pin and the latch mechanism opens, it releases and allows you to pull or push on the knob.

After you have ahold of the shaft or spindle, remove the old door knob and replace it with the new one. Check that the latch functions properly before tightening new set screws.

Latch

The latch that opens your door will wear out due to the wear and tear of use. It is simple to change the latch on your door handle. This will make huge differences in how it opens and closes.

Depending on the type of handle you have depending on the type of handle you have, the latch may be part of the knob itself, or it could be an independent piece attached to the door. You can now begin working on the new latch. Place the latch plate in the door hole and secure it using the hardware provided. Make sure the square pin that is on the interior of the latch is facing the latching mechanism inside the handle, and that it lines up with the other screw chambers in the door handle. Then, push the exterior latch plate onto the handle and secure it using the screws supplied.

Strike Plate

It is typical to replace a door aluminium window handle because it is loose or doesn't lock properly. This is typically caused by incorrectly aligned parts of the latching mechanism, such as the strike plate being too short or has moved upwards or down on the doorjamb over time. This project allows you replace your old strikeplate with a more substantial one, which can provide greater security for your door and will keep it closed.

Apply some lipstick or other marking material on the bolt that you are using to determine if it's the strike plate. Close the door and attempt to latch it. If the mark is lower than your strike plate hole, it means that the plate is too small and the door won't latch. If the mark is above the strike plate hole, it's most likely that the strike plate has been moved up or down on the doorjamb.

Depending on your door, you may be able to just attach the new strike plate into the external door handles over the old upvc door handles one, using the screws included with it. However, you may need to drill holes first, and then chisel out some of the wood to ensure it's a snug fit. If this is the situation, be careful to not cut too much wood or you'll damage the integrity of the doorjamb.

Installing a brand new box-style strike plate will give the lock a stronger hold on the doors and will require more force to open them. Typically, it requires two longer screws that anchor the strike plate to the door frame. To do this, you'll have to remove the current strike plate, then drill and chisel away the wood to make space for the new one.

This hard-to find strike plate is made from solid brass and has a thick, heavy-duty. It's specifically designed to be used with antique rim locks. This kit includes wood screws as well as machine screws, so you can choose the right hardware for your requirements. Be aware that wood screws have a pointed tip, while machine screws are more blunt.
